HYPNOTIX

Osnabrück 16.03.2001 Works

This Friday evening was not one of the best to play for Hypnotix. The little Cheops Location in the Disco Works was also not very useful for them.

Normally this small room gives Bands the opportunity to keep a close contact to the audience. And so there had been some very good concerts in the past. Bourama Badji and his musicians had good gigs in Osnabrück in the past, but in a different Location and with a different program.

Now to the point that is important from my sight. I’m a big fan of Hypnotix since I heard from them. The concerts so far brought magic of all cultures and countries of the world to the audience. All people were captured and forced to move their feet during the gig. The voice of Bourama and the moves of Milada and the  grooving rhythm-machine of the other guys were well mixed.

But this year something changed. The tracks, which were performed, were different in style. Bourama’s voice was in the background. The rhythm was more important. All titles were more tight. Even the old good tracks like G7 were performed in that style.

The magic was gone…..

Hypnotix are losing their colour. The mystic of their songs – the sadness – the dramatic scenes-all drowned and sacrificed to the mainstream rhythm. I don’t know who told them to polish their sound like this, but it was clear to see, that the reactions were not so frenetic as in the past.

The new CD is NOT guilty of that. After a masterpiece like Witness Of Our Times it still smells the sweet perfume of miracle and ethno. For me it reaches 9 of 10 points from the Witness-album.  That is very good for a hit following CD.

But why the hell this change? Do they want to become just another good Dub-Band? There is a mass of them. Hypnotix are (until now) unique.

Ok, ok it will take a long breath to get to the top. But first you need a strong identity. Hypnotix has it-I hope they will keep it.

This is a meaning of a good friend and supporter from Germany. It is not the promotion that can make a band big – it is the music and the promotion.

I hope to hear more good things from this band.

I wish them all the best
